Mixing--Girl Named Kyle

Invicta Records has now completed recording all the instrument and vocal tracks for Girl Named Kyle's debut release. Musicians who have played on these tracks count among Denver's best--including Steve Merritt on percussion, Kim Stone on bass, Tracy LaGuardia on violin, Mike Lucas on sax, Peter Schmidt on keyboards, and Jeff Laquatra on guitars. Kyle is singing all vocals. A rough mix of one of Kyle's songs--Toxins--is on the MySpace sites of Invicta Records and Girl Named Kyle. We will spend the rest of this week mixing more than a dozen tracks, many of which we believe are very strong songs with broad crossover appeal. The tracks will then be mastered, and a commercial release is expected soon.

Invicta Signs Girl Named Kyle

Invicta Records is proud to announce the exciting signing of Denver singer-songwriter Girl Named Kyle to its impressive roster of up and coming artists.  Girl Named Kyle--otherwise known by her street name of Kyle Simmons--is an 18 year old very talented singer and acoustic guitar player that boasts her own unique sound--think Nora Jones meets Joan Jett.  In 1998 Kyle found the realism of her father's guitar, and soon began creating a sense of safety and relation with her unique writing ability and her slow yet satisfying riffs.  In 2005 brought the name that fills the spaces, Girl Named Kyle.  Nothing less, nothing more.  Girl Named Kyle's depth and breath attracts audiences from high school age through classic rock adults.  Invicta warmly welcomes Girl Named Kyle to the record company.  Expect her in the studio very soon and her debut CD to be released by this summer.

Review of "Shelter From the Storm"

Independent Artist Registry
This is a strong submission. The songs are well written with good lyrics and catchy riffs and melodies. The performances are very good and the production is solid. This submission is really good and has a lot of commercial appeal. The grooves are strong and the vocal/harmonies are great. The tempo and pace are well suited for radio and the lengths of the songs are good. Maintain the above mentioned qualities and you’ll be surprised at what doors open for you.

Review of "Shelter From the Storm"

By Mike Warren--The Pitch, The Weekly Entertainment Newspaper for Metro Kansas City
In the early '90s, bands such as the Hollow Men, the Mahoots, and the Rainmakers (when they weren't playing Denmark) rattled the Midwest with intelligent lyrics and sounds that were half 1965 and half post-Reagan anxiety. Rockhill has logged more miles on K-10 type limestone roads than Rockhill Road or William Rockhill Nelson himself, which proves that this sound never quite went away. The band has bluesy, mid-'60s pop (the Animals, Sir Douglas Quintet) down cold--and with 2-minutes-and-change transistor-radio-ready tunes such as "I Want You" from longtime K.C. guitarist Gary Paredes, and "Slip and Fall" which was written by Paredes and sung by bassist Doug Osburn--they play it straight. Still, the strength of the CD, which risks blurring together with a zillion other roots albums, comes from moments of complication in the lyrics. "Shelter From the Storm" (She is his Springtime in the Winter--He is her Shelter From the Storm)--from another veteran K.C. singer/songwriter, Phil Neal--starts out as a Mellencamp tale of suburban boy and small-town girl, but ends with the couple holding onto each other for comfort amid the uncertainties of hearing their grown children laugh at what Dad and Mom just don't understand. Neal's "Drumbeat of War", a Phil Ochs anthem-in waiting, laments our sons and daughters dying in the Iraqi desert, but states bluntly--it's quite a sacrifice they're making for me and you. Two songs, including Osburn's bittersweet "Fool for You", loll in the solace of just curling up on the sofa with your loved one. Rockhill somehow captures divan rock & roll just at the point in the evening when you wonder exactly where the fuck it went.

The Rockhills

By Shane P. Dolbier--The Pitch, The Weekly Entertainment Newspaper for Metro Kansas City
"Playing it safe for most bands usually means churning out uninspired fodder, but in the case of Kansas City's The Rockhills, this rule need not apply. Armed with an arsenal of adult oriented modern rock, this four-piece bounces from loose, jangly Americana pop (think Tom Petty) to comfortable, hippie-era tendencies (imagine The Grateful Dead meets The Band). No stranger to successful songwriting, Phil Neal (also known for his time in The PowerTies and an MTV-aided solo career) leads his crew through eleven mature tracks that seldom reveal a flaw. Standouts include the gentle, heart-on-the-sleeve opener "Two Time Loser," the hillbilly pop of "Fear of the Man", and "Homeless", which rocks out country style courtesy of a smooth slide guitar and restless harmonica approach. Other keepers--the lazy rambler "Burns Like a Flame" and the relentless toe tapper "American Girls". While most of the cuts here rely on smart vocal hooks and harmonies, The Rockhills also demonstrate a tremendous talent on a variety of instruments--something that seems to be missing in much of today's alternarock. Without a doubt, this should leave the contemporary rock fan craving more. The Rockhills are headed by KC veterans Phil Neal and Gary Paredes. The band relies upon those old standard jangly guitars and clever melodies to fuel their 2-1/2 minute pop songs. Neal’s career has had videos on MTV and Neal/Paredes songs listed in Cash Box. Doug Osburn on bass and ex-Bad Manners drummer Steph Oldham carry the rhythm section."

By Patti Wilkinson--Entertainment Agent, The Haddad Restaurant Group
“I wanted to share with you some of the wonderful comments I have received from The Fountain Cafe and Fred P. Otts regarding your recent engagements there. The Fountain Cafe reports that the Rockhills are top on their list of favorite bands for “all the right" reasons. "They always bring in a tons of friends, play exactly the kind of music that people want to hear, and are all around great guys!" I have received positive reports from Fred P. Otts as well. Initially, I was impressed with the band’s musicianship and professionalism, but I have to add that you've performed above all expectations! The Rockhills are not just musicians, but entertainers as well. I’ll be contacting you soon to secure future dates for both clubs. We want the Rockhills to be a regular part of our entertainment schedule. On behalf of The Haddad Restaurant Group, thank you for doing such a great job! We're looking forward to a long relationship with the Rockhills. Please feel free to contact me it the band ever needs references. You've made fans of us!”
